Caring Hearts Food Drive

Caring Hearts is a local food drive charity which AFSA Chapter 872 supports. It is under the direction of the First United Methodist Church in O'Fallon. Our chapter assists in assembling and filling the food boxes which many churches in the surrounding community utilize in order to purchase essential sustenance for their underprivileged members and elderly homebound. Additionally, the First Sergeants Group purchases a number of boxes to provide assistance to Airmen and their families in need.

In addition to assisting those in need, local citizens can order boxes if they wish to purchase food in bulk. The meat and produce in a typical box is worth about $50-$60. However, the food boxes assembled by the program are available for only $20.

The Caring Hearts food drive runs year-round. Volunteers meet every fourth Saturday at the church to put together the food boxes for distribution. On a monthly average, the chapter assembles 160-180 boxes with about 20 of those going back to the Scott AFB community. During the Holiday season in November and December, it is not uncommon for volunteer to put together up to 300 boxes per month. In 2011, AFSA Chapter 872 helped to assemble over 2,200 boxes.

Mission Statement: Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with God's people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into what God intended.

How It Works: Habitat for Humanity selects homeowner families according to criteria that does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, or ethnic background. All homeowners contribute "sweat equity;" they work as partners with the affiliate and other volunteers to accomplish Habitat's mission both locally and worldwide.

Habitat for Humanity sells houses to selected families with no profit or interest added. House payments will be used for construction or renovation of additional affordable housing.
